Demolition work is set to begin shortly on the former school building at Les Ozouets.

The work at what was St Peter Port School is due to start before the end of May and take about 16 weeks to complete, officials said.

It is part of the programme agreed by the States to redevelop the site into the Les Ozouets Post-16 Campus.

The contract had been awarded to Rok Construct, with the removal of asbestos from the site being a key part of the project, officials said.

The Guernsey Institute facilities are to be built in the first phase, alongside the laying of the foundations for a new sixth form centre.

Nick Hynes is the director of education and senior responsible officer for the Transforming Education Programme.

He said: "Awarding this contract is a significant step as we progress plans to build new and much-needed facilities for The Guernsey Institute and lay the foundations for the new Sixth Form Centre, agreed by the States in January as the first phase of the construction of our new Post-16 Campus at Lez Ozouets.

"While the tender is out now to find a construction partner for the build, it is important that this initial work is commenced to demolish the former St Peter Port School building and clear it of asbestos."

The current target date for the opening of the new facilities at Les Ozouets is early 2027.
