Seventy young journalists gathered in Westminster to mark the 25th anniversary of Jill Dando's death on Monday.

Jill, who was born in Weston-super-Mare in North Somerset and went onto become a high profile BBC presenter and journalist, was shot dead outside her home in London, on 26 April 1999.

Jill Dando News Centres were launched in 2017 out of her former school, Worle Academy.

Many of the pupils from the news centres across North Somerset travelled to Parliament for an anniversary event on Monday in her memory.

Nigel Dando, Jill's older brother, joined the event in London and said the news centres were set up as a "legacy project... aimed at promoting her values".

"With a project like this it keeps her memory alive," he said.

"It's a way of perpetuating her legacy and to let these students know that someone who came from humble beginnings can make it so big in the world of TV.

"It's an example of the journalism she went for.

"Who knows, one of these students could follow in her footsteps one day."

Since its expansion, it now teaches and encourages up to 130 children aged seven to 18 about spreading good, ethical news.

The centres also educates people outside the UK in Malawi in Africa.

Many students told the BBC they wanted to "share stories people otherwise would not hear" and for news centres to "spread far beyond the UK".

Priory Academy, also in Weston, sent students from its news centre to the anniversary event on Monday.

Sarah O'Gorman, an English teacher at the school, said: "I think students are keen to champion things like mental health and disability related news and anything that relates with young people."

The students interviewed the Speaker of the House of Commons Sir Lindsay Hoyle as part of their day out.

The case of Jill Dando's death remains unsolved 25 years on.
