King becomes patron of cathedral friends charity

The Friends of Norwich Cathedral will be joined by King Charles as a patron of the charity

King Charles will follow in the footsteps of his mother and become patron of a charity supporting Norwich Cathedral.

Queen Elizabeth was also a patron of the Friends of Norwich Cathedral.

The charity received confirmation of His Majesty’s patronage in a letter from Buckingham Palace.

It follows a review of royal patronages conducted by the Royal Household following His Majesty's accession.

The Friends helped raise funds to rebuild Norwich Cathedral's organ which was completed in 2023

The Friends, which has had Royal support since 1930 when George V became a supporter, currently has more than 1,800 members.

The independent charity was set up to raise funds to help maintain Norwich Cathedral’s fabric.

Over the last nine decades it has supported everything from the building of the Hostry and Refectory, to restoration work in the Cloister and the rebuilding of the Cathedral’s organ.

Charles Barratt, chairman of the Friends, said the continuation of Royal support was "so appropriate as we approach our centenary celebrations".

The Dean of Norwich, the Very Revd Dr Andrew Braddock, said: “The historic and close ties between the Royal Family, Norfolk and the Cathedral are something we celebrate.

"His Majesty’s patronage is a huge encouragement for the Friends in all they do to support the Cathedral.”
