The iconic Hull chip spice could soon be getting taste buds tingling on the other side of the Atlantic after US TikTok star Kalani Smith gave it a go - and loved it.

Known to his 2.9 million followers as Kalani Ghost Hunter, Mr Smith recently filmed himself tucking in to some chips and a battered potato, known locally as a pattie.

He was in the city filming at Trinity Market for his latest video, focusing on different foods from across the UK.

Mr Smith said two women who were watching him told him he "must try chip spice" and judging by his reaction he is glad they did.

Chip spice - a seasoning made using paprika, tomato powder, onion and garlic - is often added to chips in Hull in the same way that other cities use salt or pepper.

Mr Smith became popular on TikTok after creating content by visiting places believed to be haunted. He only started food videos a couple of months ago and they have become a huge success.

He was not too keen on the pattie, saying it is "basically taking a ball of mashed potato and frying it".

However, Mr Smith is now a firm fan of chip spice.

He said: "Everybody in Hull told me to get this. Chip spice is good. Wow. Chip spice, for me, gets a 10."
