Police have launched an investigation after the remains of an osprey were found in Perth and Kinross.

The protected species is believed to have been nesting at Loch of the Lowes, near Dunkeld - which is close to where the bird was found.

Officers are working with partner agencies to establish the full circumstances and the force said inquiries are at an early stage.

It is not yet clear whether there has been any criminality.

Insp James Longden said it was illegal to kill any protected species, adding: "Information from the local community could prove vital and it is important we speak to anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area, or who may know something which could assist our investigation."

Anyone with information has been urged to contact Police Scotland on the non-emergency line., external
