A man arrested over online threats against Lilian Seenoi-Barr – who is to become the first black mayor in Northern Ireland - has been released on bail.

The 30-year-old, who was arrested on Sunday, has been released pending further enquiries, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said.

He was questioned at a police station in Londonderry on suspicion of harassment, threats to kill and improper use of a public electronic communications network.

The PSNI previously said the threats are being treated as a racially-motivated hate crime.

Ms Seenoi-Barr, who has been selected by the SDLP to be the next mayor of Derry and Strabane, said on Sunday that racist abuse will not put her off taking on the role.

She told BBC News NI's Sunday Politics the majority of the people in the area stood with her and the people of Londonderry had taken her "into their hearts".

"I think it has actually made me more determined, because we need to be represented, we need a more inclusive and progressive society," she said.
