M3 crash shuts motorway northbound at Basingstoke

A man has been arrested for drug driving offences after a two-car crash closed a stretch of the M3.

The crash involved a silver Ford Focus and grey Audi A5 on the northbound carriageway near junction 6 for Basingstoke shortly after 10:00 BST.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary confirmed the Ford driver sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the Audi, a 26-year-old man from London, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

He has also been arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink and drugs.

A force spokesperson said it received reports the Audi had been seen using the hard shoulder, speeding and undertaking on the M3 and M27.

The motorway was closed until 12:30 BST. Police thanked drivers for their patience and warned to allow extra time for their journeys while congestion clears.

The force is also appealing for witnesses and anyone with dash cam footage of the incident.
