Former Lord Mayor David Gemmell to have civic funeral at Hull Minster

A former lord mayor of Hull is to have a civic funeral and service at Hull Minster.

Honorary Alderman David Gemmell died in March at the age of 83.

He served as a Labour councillor for 26 years after first being elected in 1988 and was Hull's Lord Mayor from 2010 to 2011.

Among his achievements was developing tourist attraction The Deep, which opened in 2002 and securing funding for the Hull History Centre.

He was also on the board of directors of Hull Truck Theatre and was a member of the Humber Bridge Board.

Mr Gemmell was appointed an OBE or services to tourism in 2005.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, councillor Daren Hale, leader of the Labour group on the council, described him as a political giant.

"Dave was a dedicated public servant who believed in a better society," said Mr Hale.

"He was much respected and a driving force to improve culture and leisure in our area."

The civic service for the former lord mayor is open for all to attend and it is set to start in Hull Minster at 10:00 BST on 10 May.
