Connah’s Quay Nomads manager Neil Gibson will be hoping to create another Welsh Cup final shock on Sunday.

Nomads face holders The New Saints at Newport’s Rodney Parade, with Saints unbeaten in the competition since 2018.

Gibson was Prestatyn Town’s player-manager when they beat favourites Bangor City in the 2013.

“We were underdogs against a Bangor team that were very competitive and had won the league a couple of seasons earlier,” Gibson told the FAW website.

“It was such a great occasion, and one for the whole community.

“Winning it with Connah’s Quay was also a special moment though when I was assistant manager.

“If we can win it on Sunday, then for me, it’s almost like completing the set, having won it as a player-manager and an assistant.”

Nomads were the last team to beat Saints in the Welsh Cup, winning a quarter-final meeting 2-1 before going on to reach the final that season and beating Aberystwyth, with Gibson assistant manager.

But Saints’ domination of Welsh domestic football has continued this season, finishing 33 points ahead of second placed Nomads to secure the Cymru Premier title for a 16th time.

Craig Harrison’s side have also won the Nathaniel MG Cup this season and victory over Nomads would see them complete the domestic Welsh treble.

“It’s a huge test against Connah’s Quay, it always has been, and it always will be,” said Harrison, a five-time winner of the competition in two spells as Saints manager.

“They’ve got a good squad with good and honest players, a few of them which I signed in my time there.

“There’s others who have been there when they’ve won leagues and cups in the past, and they are a club and a team we have immense respect for.”
