Jersey's water supply drops following dry spring

Water supplies on Jersey have fallen following a dry spring and an increase in water use.

Jersey Water said it had seen a 20% increase in demand following a dry May, with many people watering their gardens.

Managing director Howard Snowden said: "We are concerned that we've had a very long dry spell this year.

"We want people to take care in use of water, as non-essential use is the big concern."

Mr Snowden added: "This year may be challenging. If weather continues to be dry into the summer we could have a few problems."

In March Jersey Water said it would install water meters on every property it supplied to encourage people to use less water.

The Environment Agency estimates that water demand will increase by 15% over the next 25 years.
