Jersey coastguard calls for safety at sea

An appeal for all kayak, canoe and rowing boat owners to take adequate safety precautions when at sea has been made by Jersey coastguard.

It follows the rescue of a man who became stranded on rocks after being thrown from his kayak on Monday.

The man, who was not carrying a mobile or VHF radio, had to wait for his partner to return to shore before the coastguard could be alerted.

Jersey coastguard said the incident was a "pertinent reminder"

Captain Rick Masterman said: "On this occasion the incident happened close to the shore but we are seeing more and more kayakers venturing further afield which emphasises the need to have appropriate safety equipment with them."

The coastguard service has suggested that all pleasure craft users carry a VHF radio, torch, lifejacket, parachute and hand flares when at sea.
