Work is due to start this month on a £63m road project to make travel to an Olympic mountain biking event quicker.

The A13-Sadlers Farm scheme to boost travel between London, Chelmsford, Southend and Canvey Island is due to be complete in March 2012.

The scheme will see a new bypass between the A13 and A130, simpler roundabouts and road widening.

Employment areas and the venue staging Olympic mountain biking events will benefit, Essex County Council said.

Norman Hume, Essex County Council cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: "The A13-Sadlers Farm project is the largest single scheme we've seen in Essex in a decade."
