Multi-million pound Redcar revamp approved

Work will begin as soon as possible, said the council

Plans for a multi-million pound revamp of the seafront at Redcar have been given the go-ahead.

The £36.9m scheme, which will include a leisure centre, swimming pool and multi-storey car park, was approved by Redcar and Cleveland Council.

There will also be a library and an arts and media centre for children.

Council leader George Dunning said the local authority would now work to move the project forward "as quickly as possible".

Councillor Mark Hannon, cabinet member for economic development, added: "Redcar has been waiting a long time for these plans to become a reality and I really look forward to work starting next year.

"These developments along with the exciting plans for the seafront will help to regenerate the town and put it on the map for all the right reasons."

In March, campaigners won a six-year fight to overturn council plans for a £55m development on green space in Redcar.

The authority had wanted to build more than 300 houses, a sports centre and a swimming pool on the town's Coatham Common, but the UK Supreme Court ruled it should be registered as a village green.
