Bergerac star John Nettles honoured by Queen

The actor was Det Jim Bergerac throughout the Eighties until 1991

The actor John Nettles, who played Eighties TV detective Bergerac, is among those to be included in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

The star, from Evesham, Worcestershire, has been appointed an OBE for services to drama. His spokeswoman said he was "absolutely thrilled and delighted".

After his role as the Jersey detective Jim Bergerac, the actor starred in ITV crime serial Midsomer Murders.

The 66-year-old confirmed last year he was quitting the show.

The final series will be aired later this year.

'Can't believe it'

Others from Hereford and Worcester to be honoured include Peter Claiden from Leominster, a former principal inspector of Air Accidents, who was involved in the Lockerbie investigation. He is appointed an OBE.

Michael Moran, the former chairman of Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce is appointed an MBE and Ch Supt Jane Horwood, from West Mercia Police, has been awarded the Queen's Police Medal for her distinguished service.

The officer, who has been with the force for more than 30 years, said she was "very pleased" and "somewhat surprised" to hear she was to receive the honour.

"I get enormous pleasure from serving the community and throughout my career I have strived to do the best that I can," she said.

"West Mercia Police has achieved many successes over the years and I am proud to be part of them.

"You can do your bit but to be recognised in this way is absolutely fantastic. I cannot believe it"
