Queen honours Wolverhampton volunteer

A Wolverhampton volunteer who helps look after older people of African and Caribbean background has been named in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Essie Nell Lewis, who has been appointed an MBE, won a Lottery grant to set up the Moreland Trust in 2000.

She developed the idea for the group during 18 years as a Wolverhampton Racial Equality Council board member.

Others appointed an MBE include Francis Betteridge, of Wednesbury, for services to the voluntary sector in Sandwell.

Police medal

Stuart William Fisher, from Walsall, was also honoured with an MBE for his voluntary service to the fire service road casualty reduction team.

Robin Landman, of Wolverhampton, who is the chief executive officer for the Network for Black Professionals, was appointed a CBE for services to black and minority ethnic further education.

Professor Alan Shaw Murie, from the University of Birmingham, and Sarah Webb, the chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Housing, were appointed as CBEs.

West Midlands Police Chief Constable Christopher Sims and Det Ch Supt Liam Joseph O'Brien have been awarded the Queen's Police Medal.
