Free activities offered to poorer pupils in Wiltshire

Children from low-income families across Wiltshire are to be offered free after-school activities.

Participation in sports, drama and arts can improve self-esteem, motivation and aspirations, the county council said.

Schools in Trowbridge and Marlborough, which piloted the Free Time subsidy scheme, reported that pupils seemed happier and showed improved attitudes.

Less well-off youngsters in every school in the county will be able to join activities clubs from September.

'Reap the rewards'

Study support officer, Jonothan Hope said: "Most of us remember a club or activity we enjoyed when we were young.

"The impact that had on our confidence, friendships and aspirations is probably something we can still remember or feel the effects of today.

"Free Time means that regardless of whether or not children and their families can afford the cost of clubs and activities, they all have the opportunity to take part and reap the rewards."

Parents can talk to their child's school administration officer to find out which activities are available and if they are eligible.
