Staff said they had been left distressed by the burglary

Owners of a Leicester jewellery shop have said they do not know what to do to improve security after the second raid in the area in a week.

A gang smashed their way into Bipin Jewellers on Belgrave Road on Monday and grabbed gold worth about £10,000.

The road, known as the Golden Mile due to its jewellery shops, has seen many raids, including another last week.

CCTV was installed earlier in the year but Bipin Jewellers says the robberies keep happening.

Three masked men cut open security shutters and then used sledgehammers to break through toughened glass at the store just after 2300 BST.

Six raids

Jitendra Vaitha, the manager at Bipins, said: "I can't believe how this has happened.

"We are boarded up now but what can you do? We have got grilles, we have got toughened glass, where does it end? We don't know what to say.

"We have seen CCTV footage of the actual event and it has left us quite distressed."

Detectives investigating the incident said they were also considering any links between this burglary and the recent robbery at another jewellers on Belgrave Road.

They also confirmed there had been six reported raids on jewellers, including the latest two, in the area in the past 12 months.

In January, several shops on the road were given CCTV cameras along with a radio system linking shops and police.
