Golfer Colin Montgomerie said Aberdeen needed such a centre

A £3m campaign has been launched to bring a cancer care centre to Aberdeen, backed by golfer Colin Montgomerie.

Maggie's Cancer Care Centres and the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation have teamed up for the fundraising drive.

The centre would be based at Foresterhill. Maggie's already has several centres, including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Inverness.

Colin Montgomerie said: "The service that Maggie's provides is invaluable and unique."

He explained: "Aberdeen is the only city in Scotland not to have a Maggie's Centre and we aim to put that right.

"Maggie's Aberdeen will offer support to the thousands of people affected by cancer in the region as well as their family and friends."

The Ryder Cup captain's mother died of lung cancer in 1991.
