Asbestos has been found in some areas of Princess Elizabeth Hospital in Guernsey.

Workers have been told to wear protective clothing in plant rooms and service ducts after asbestos was found during a survey prior to refurbishment.

The hospital said there was no suggestion any asbestos had entered public areas and patients and visitors were safe.

The asbestos had previously been used as lagging to pipe-work and insulation.

A spokesman said: "There is no risk to members of the public from the materials identified."

He said any staff who may have been exposed to asbestos had been informed.

"The occupational health consultant will review the situation and determine the approach for each individual who may have been affected. "

An asbestos specialist has been brought to deal with the material.
