North Lincolnshire Council plans partial jobs freeze

North Lincolnshire Council has announced a partial recruitment freeze in order to manage budget cuts.

The council said it would only be recruiting for front-line posts with immediate effect.

The decision comes after the coalition government's budget on Tuesday which set out a raft of spending cuts.

Simon Driver, chief executive of North Lincolnshire Council, said: "We live in unprecedented times and we are taking unprecedented action."

He added: "It's not nice but it must be done to soften the blows coming."

A pay freeze will also be implemented for some staff, the council said.

Steve Swift, cabinet member for corporate services, said: "We have to act and we must endeavour to protect front-line services whenever possible.

"That's why we haven't implemented a blanket freeze. To do so could compromise services unnecessarily."

The council currently employs more than 7,000 people.
