Middlesex holidaymakers caught in Newquay riptide

Three holidaymakers had to be rescued by the RNLI in Cornwall on Sunday after being caught in a riptide.

The alarm was raised at about 2030 BST by a member of the public who reported the swimmers being pulled out to sea at Porth, Newquay.

Newquay's lifeboats, which were already involved in the search for a missing swimmer off Fistral, were diverted to the scene.

All three swimmers, who were from Middlesex, were shocked but unhurt.

An RNLI spokesperson said, despite the rapid response, the swimmers were in great danger and barely able to keep their heads above water.

Volunteer crew members jumped into the water to support the casualties until they were transferred to a lifeboat and taken to shore, where they were checked by paramedics.

No-one required hospital treatment.
