A new stretch of a coastal path between Denbighshire and Conwy has been opened to allow better access for walkers, cyclists and wheelchair users.

The new 27-mile (43km) section of Wales Coast Path runs from Prestatyn to Llandudno.

The path received funding from the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Union.

Jane Davidson, Environment Minister, said it would help attract more visitors to the region.

Opening the path at Capel Sant Trillo in Rhos on Sea, she added: "It is a real pleasure to be opening this new and beautiful section of the Wales Coast Path.

"I am confident that the path will help to attract more visitors to this stunning coastline and in doing so will provide a real boost to the local economy."

She said she also hoped it would encourage local people to lead healthier lives.

The assembly government wants to create a footpath around Wales' coast by 2012.

An oak baton was being carried along the path by local children, fell runners and walkers.

The opening coincides with Conwy Walking Week.
