Somerset schools boss has hopes' for axed projects

Somerset's education chief said there was still hope for local school building plans, despite a national redevelopment programme being scrapped.

The coalition government announced on Monday it was dropping the Building Schools For The Future scheme.

Three projects in Somerset face the axe and three have been put on hold, along with Taunton's planned academy.

But councillor John Osman, lead member of children's services, said he would continue to press for investment.

"We're absolutely devastated by the [scrapping] decision, but I think there is hope," he said.

Strong case

"I refuse to accept this decision at this moment. We have a very strong case for seven new schools, we need to go to government now and show them the work we have done. We need to promote a case for all seven schools to continue.

Schemes for East Bridgwater, Haygrove and Penrose Schools would be axed, but Chilton Trinity, Elmwood and Robert Blake Science College may still go ahead.

"It's such a shame for the communities for Bridgwater and Taunton," said Mr Osman.

"I'll be looking to build partnerships and get support from the Somerset community and take our case to London to get this funding.
