The managing director of Lydd Airport in Kent has resigned.

Jonathan Gordon said he was happy with the success in taking forward plans to extend the runway and build a new terminal building.

The controversial scheme was passed by Shepway Council in March but the Government Office for the South East decided a public inquiry must be held.

Mr Gordon said: "I wish the company all the best for the future - we have parted good friends."

He added: "I believe the airport has a great future and will become an important part of the local economy with job creation and economic prosperity."

Mr Gordon, who took up his post in August 2009, said the senior management team would now have a "more hands-on approach".

Campaigners have argued the £25m expansion plan could have a negative effect on areas including Dungeness, Romney Marsh and the Rye Bay site of special scientific interest.
