Ten people, including five children, have been rescued by lifeboat after they were cut off by the incoming tide on a sandbank off the Carmarthenshire coast.

Burry Port RNLI volunteers launched after a resident warned Swansea Coastguard of the danger.

The RNLI said the group were caught out by the speed of the tide behind the Shoreline Caravan Park.

They were taken to Pembrey old harbour and left with Burry Port Coastguard.

The rescue operation began at 1625 BST on Saturday when the group were cut off from the shore by as the tide followed the course of the river which flows alongside the beach.

The RNLI said the call again highlighted "the importance of knowing the tide times and to appreciate the rapidity at which the tide comes in and the extra dangers of going on to sandbanks in an estuary with so many rivers".
