Lincolnshire swimmers celebrating clean river

Swimmers have jumped into a Lincolnshire river as part of a Europe-wide event to celebrate clean rivers.

The European Water Directive is calling for all rivers to be "living" - clean, good for fish and perfect for taking a dip - by 2015.

"The Big Jump" happened at the River Witham near Bardney on Sunday afternoon.

Sandra Moran of the Blue Sky Swimming Club, which is organising the event, said river swimming was "uplifting".

She said: "I swam in a river for the first time this year and it was the most uplifting experience I've had in years.

"It's just such a different experience to the sea or a pool - the water is very soft, you can feel the currents but it's not frightening."

The Outdoor Swimming Society (OSS) has held a number of regional "big jumps" to introduce more people to the concept of appreciating their rivers.
