Construction work on £63m Essex junction upgrade begins

Construction work has begun on a £63m upgrade to a road junction in Essex.

The project to improve the Sadlers Farm junction, where the A13 meets the A130, is said to be the biggest road project for the county in a decade.

The new junction will see a new bypass providing faster direct access to Chelmsford, Southend and Canvey Island.

The work, funded by the Department for Transport, is due to be completed by March 2012, and in 15 years time will cater for 300,000 vehicles a day.

The new junction will support the growth and regeneration of the Thames Gateway.

An Essex County Council spokesman said the project was the largest Essex had seen since the construction of the A130 more than a decade ago.

He added that the M25 widening scheme was a larger project but was outside the county's administrative boundary.

Motorists are being told much of the work will be done away from existing roads.
