Gloucester bridge CCTV targets bus lane abusers

CCTV cameras are being installed on a Gloucester bridge to catch people illegally using a bus lane.

The lane was built on Llanthony Road bridge to give bus users easier access to the new Quays shopping centre and improve safety for pedestrians.

The county council said increasing numbers of drivers were ignoring the restrictions and using the bridge to cut through into the town centre.

Cameras and warning signs have been put up to catch or deter offenders.

'Real risk'

Councillor Stan Waddington, cabinet member for transport, said: "We've decided to get tough on people who abuse this system because we are concerned about the safety of pedestrians.

"Pedestrians using this area only expect to see occasional buses and taxis and with drivers using it illegally, there is a real risk an accident could occur."

PCSO Adam Stevens, who regularly patrols the bridge, said: "In the past month, I have stopped over 20 vehicles crossing this bridge and a large majority of the drivers tell me they are following their satnavs.

"I would like to remind drivers that if they are following their satnavs, they still have a responsibility to be driving with due care. That, therefore, means being aware of road signs."

Anyone caught on camera using the bus lane will be sent a penalty notice and ordered to pay a fine of £60.

The scheme will be enforced by Gloucester City Council on behalf of the county council.
