Welsh artist and lecturer Osi Rhys Osmond has died from cancer, the Arts Council of Wales has confirmed.

Born in Wattsville, Caerphilly county, he taught at Swansea Metropolitan University's School of Art and Design.

He was admitted to the Gorsedd of Bards at the 2006 National Eisteddfod in Swansea for his contribution to the arts and education and promoting the Welsh language.

Arts council chairman Dai Smith said he was one of Wales' "foremost artists".

As well painting, Osmond, from Llansteffan, Carmarthenshire, was also a radio and television broadcaster.
