Visitors will be able to experience the "sights, smells and sounds" of the Roman period at a fort site.

Richborough Roman Fort, near Sandwich, will host a "Romans return" event on Saturday and Sunday.

The fort, described by English Heritage as "one of the most significant Roman sites in England", witnessed the beginning and the end of Roman rule in Britain.

Tim Benfield, assistant events manager at English Heritage, said visitors could go from cheering on a champion soldier to learning about crafts from the time.

He told BBC Radio Kent the Romans left from the area when the empire began to collapse.

Mr Benfield said: "Those sites, smells, sounds, all of it, being able to put yourself in that moment and set the scene for Roman Britain.

"The experience is there for everybody."

He described the site at the time as a bustling port site with imports and exports "all flowing through".

In 2023, the fort reopened after an 18 month closure for renovations including the building of an 8m (26ft) gateway on the same spot where the first Roman soldiers invaded Britain.

Events will include demonstrations of Roman weapons and a battle display.

They will take place between 10:00 BST and 16:00 on both days.
