An air ambulance was called to a "serious" motorway crash involving multiple vehicles, National Highways has said.

The A1(M) southbound carriageway has been closed between junction 16, for Stilton, near Peterborough, and junction 13, for Brampton, Cambridgeshire.

Traffic on the northbound carriageway was held earlier to allow the air ambulance to land, but it has since reopened.

Police and the East of England Ambulance Service were also at the scene.

National Highways said: "All emergency services remain at the scene with Cambridgeshire police leading the response.

"Traffic Officers and contractors have implemented strategic closures as the road is likely to remain closed throughout the evening."

It has put a diversion in place, with drivers heading southbound urged to follow the solid triangle symbol on road signs.
