Runners have set off on a 24-hour trek around the island of Bryher in the Isles of Scilly.

More than 20 people are taking take part in the first Beast of Bryher, which started at 15:00 BST.

The aim is to run as far as possible in 24 hours, but the emphasis is on having fun, said organiser, Wez Swain.

"The winner is the one with the biggest smile on their face," he said.

The Beast follows the success of swim runs and the Scilly 60, which is now in its third year, around the five inhabited islands.

Each circuit of Bryher is about 4.6 miles (7.5km), with runners allowed to take breaks or even have a nap along the way.

"You can run as far as you want to," said Mr Swain. "We shall see who covers the longest distance, but it's about having a nice time."

The idea was sparked by a competitor in the Scilly 60, who suggested a 24-hour event.

"The islands are beautiful and such a lovely place to experience running or swimming," said Mr Swain.
