Hundreds of people, including actress Vicky McClure, are set to take part in a walk to raise awareness of dementia.

More than 1,400 people have signed up to take part in the Alzheimer' Society's annual Memory Walk in Wollaton Park, Nottingham, on Saturday.

McClure, an ambassador for the charity, will start the event, before participants set off on either a 2km (1.2 miles) or 6km (3.7 miles) walk.

She said: "I walk in memory of my greatly missed nonna, Iris, who we lost to dementia in 2015 and also in support of the wonderful singers of my Dementia Choir, who are a source of constant joy and inspiration.

'A special event'

"The atmosphere is like nothing else. There is so much love in the air and you can’t help but feel lifted up by it.

"Caring for someone with dementia is really, really hard and yet, on the day, families and carers are able to feel surrounded by others who understand and totally 'get it'."

Alzheimer’s Society chief executive Kate Lee said the Memory Walk was "a special event" and money raised by it would help support families and fund research.
