Plan to find out how safe people feel in Derby

Derby City Council is asking people for their views on how safe they feel going about the city

Derby City Council wants to know how safe people feel when they are out and about in order to develop future crime prevention initiatives.

The survey comes on the back of plans to install new CCTV costing £83,000 around the city centre and in car parks to tackle violence against women and girls (VAWG).

The council wants to find out how safe residents feel walking in their local areas and which measures may help them feel less at risk.

In the latest statistics for Derby city centre, 562 crime were reported to police in August - 185 of which were classed as "violence or sexual offences".

The council said the survey would enable it to develop future measure to help people feel safer in the city

Concerns have been raised previously as Derby had some of the highest VAWG-related offences in the country during 2022-23 - amounting to a fifth of all crime in the city centre at night, the council said.

"Public safety is a top priority for the council," said Ndukwe Onuoha, cabinet member for public safety and street pride.

He added: "We have been working hard to create a safe city for all, and we want to ensure that every resident feels safe, whether in the city centre or their local area.

"I encourage all members of the community to take part in this survey. The feedback that we gather will help us to improve the safety and wellbeing of residents and visitors in Derby. Together, we can create a safe city for all."

The survey is set to close on 22 December.
