Police have warned people to stay away from Windmill Shopping Centre in Smethwick

A shopping centre in Smethwick has been shut and people warned to stay away due to a fire nearby.

More than 50 firefighters were called to a former cinema complex on Windmill Lane, at about 13:45 BST following reports of smoke billowing from a four-storey derelict building.

Windmill Lane and Windmill Shopping Centre have been closed as crews tackle the blaze, West Midlands Fire Service said.

No casualties or injuries have been reported, it added.

Residents and businesses have been advised to shut their windows and doors due to smoke in the area.

Crews are expected to remain on the scene into the evening and potentially overnight.

West Midlands Police and West Midlands Ambulance are also at the scene.
