Overnight road closures for bridge demolition

The Quarry House Lane footbridge spans over the A167 in Durham

A road will be closed overnight for four nights as a footbridge is demolished.
Quarry House Lane footbridge over the A167 near Neville's Cross in Durham will be torn down. Its age means it would cost about £1.5m to refurbish, Durham County Council said.
The steel crossing was originally built in 1967, but its usage had been in "significant decline" because people were using the nearby toucan crossing instead, the Reform-led council said.
Diversions will be in place while the A167 between Neville's Cross crossroads and the A691/Southfield Way roundabout is closed overnight between 20:00 and 06:00 GMT from Monday.
Councillor Tim McGuinness, the council's cabinet member for transport, said: "As a council, we have a statutory duty to maintain bridge structures to ensure they do not pose a danger to the public.
"In this case, the cost of ensuring the Quarry House Lane Footbridge remains in a safe condition outweighs the use it now gets from the public."
The diversion route will take drivers along the A690 and A691.
