Public views sought on sale of theatre

The theatre is on the former SMB College campus, which merged with Loughborough College earlier this year

People are being invited to give their views on plans which could lead to the sale of a theatre in Melton Mowbray.

Melton Theatre lies on the former SMB College campus in Asfordby Road, which merged with Loughborough College earlier this year.

It is understood the newly-formed Loughborough College Group, overseeing the colleges, has been awarded a £7.3m recoverable grant by the government to establish a financially-sustainable institution.

A spokesperson for the group said they had opened the consultation looking at proposals for the sale of the theatre.

The group previously said the grant would be directed towards "strengthening essential operational functions and supporting strategic investment" across the colleges.

Corrie Harris, Loughborough College Group CEO, said: "Consultation has now begun on our Melton Campus, and we are actively seeking solutions, feedback and views on how the community can move forward with this important facility.

"We are inviting proposals for the sale of the theatre business and the buildings or for public, private or community investment.

"As with everything we do, students remain at the heart of our plans, and we will ensure a minimal amount of disruption for our thriving performing arts courses which are currently delivered at the theatre.

"Students have been reassured they will continue to experience a high level of academic and pastoral support from Loughborough College Group."

It comes after theatre enthusiasts previously told the BBC it would be "absolutely devastating" if the venue was to close.

Pip Allnatt, leader of Melton Borough Council, said: "We all wish to see the college campus continue and of course our theatre, under its new management.

"Given that college is only there because of taxpayers' money it is only right that the Melton community retains its local theatre."

A public consultation event will take place at the Melton Theatre on Tuesday 14 October.
