A Devon Zoo has announced its "beloved" black rhinoceros Manyara has died.
Paignton Zoo said Manyara, born in September 2002, was peacefully put to sleep on Tuesday after battling a chronic condition.
The zoo said the rhinoceros, classified as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), had stopped responding to medical treatment, and a decline in his condition was beginning to impact his quality of life.
"It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Manyara, our beloved black rhinoceros," Paignton Zoo said in a statement.
'Powerful ambassador'
It said: "Manyara, affectionately nicknamed "Mani" by our dedicated keeping staff, was extremely popular with both team members and visitors alike.
"He was known for his wonderfully gentle nature combined with a playful spirit that endeared him to everyone who met him."
Manyara was born at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park on 18 September 2002 and joined Paignton Zoo in June 2010.
For many years, he shared his enclosure with Sita, the zoo's female Eastern black rhinoceros, which died last year.
"Mani will be deeply missed by all who knew him. We are grateful for the time we had with him and for your support as we honour his memory."
The zoo said Mani's legacy would "live on through the lives he touched", adding he was a "powerful ambassador" for his species.
