A charity is warning people to look out for a seal pup after it was disturbed by a dog which "lashed out".

British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) said a small grey seal pup was on La Braye Beach on Thursday morning where it was likely to have been resting after the "huge swells".

The charity said a member of public, with their dog, approached the seal on Tuesday morning and it fled back into the waves as the tide was rising.

The charity has asked islanders to call the JSPCA to record any further sightings and ask it to call the BDMLR "urgently" to let them know the details and the animal's location.

BDMLR said on social media: "A very small grey seal pup was hauled out on the beach, more likely to rest after the huge swells.

"Or it could be that mum has left pup there whilst they take a break from feeding or the pup may have been washed away and be exhausted and hungry.

"After being approached by a member of public, with their dog, the dog has lashed out and the seal has fled back into the waves of the rising tide."

The BDMLR has asked people to keep dogs away from seals and on leads, never to entice them back into the sea as they are on the shore for a reason and to call the sighting in so the charity can be alerted.

The charity added: "Thank you to the member of public that called in the sighting and to the JSPCA for letting us know straight away with a full description."
