Collection points have been planned for people to collect love locks that will be removed from a footbridge over the River Trent in Nottinghamshire.

Hundreds of locks attached to Wilford Suspension Bridge - which connects The Meadows and West Bridgford - will be removed on 7 October.

Severn Trent, which owns the bridge, said the locks had to be taken down over concerns they had caused damage.

A spokesperson for the water supplier confirmed collection stalls would be set up in The Meadows Park on 10 and 11 October.

People will be able to collect their locks from the stalls from 10:00 to 14:00 BST on both days, the spokesperson added.

Severn Trent urged people who wanted to remove their locks, and who had the correct keys, to do so earlier this year.

The decision to take off the locks led to upset from some who had placed the padlocks on the bridge to preserve memories of lost loved ones.

In response, the water firm said it was planning to "create something special" with any locks that were not collected.

The bridge will be closed from 09:00 until 16:00 on 7 October while the locks are removed.

"Plans for locks that are not collected are still being worked on, and we'll look to update everyone as soon as we can," a spokesperson for the company said.
