Two colleges in the South West have been added to a list of those in the country with buildings containing crumbling concrete.

Camborne College in Cornwall and Exmouth Community College in Devon were named in the latest Department of Education (DfE) list with reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (Raac).

A spokesperson for Camborne College said Raac had been found in part of the roof in the college's Penhaligon building.

Exmouth Community College's spokesperson said the Raac had affected its science labs and preparation facilities.

The DfE named 214 schools and colleges across England with confirmed RAAC in some of their buildings on Thursday.

The spokesperson for Camborne College said: "As part of our own mitigation and advice from the DfE, all staff and students from the building have been immediately relocated, with the majority moving to brand new spaces that have come online as part of the multi-million-pound redevelopment of our Camborne campus with no interruption to their learning.

"We have been reassured by the DfE that they will now deal will the necessary rectification works.”

A statement from Exmouth Community College said: "All affected areas were immediately taken out of use.

"As a large school we have been able to redistribute students to other spaces on the school site.

"There is some impact on facilities to support practical elements of our science curriculum, but our staff have been amazing at accommodating these changes in order to minimise the impact on students.

"We are working very closely with the DfE to pursue short and longer-term solutions."

Colyton Grammar School near Seaton, Devon and Petroc College, in the north of the county, were previously found to have Raac in their buildings.
