A 19-year-old man is in a critical condition following a hit-and-run in Port Glasgow.

The man was walking home from a night out along Ardmore Road, near Selkirk Road, at about 01:00 when he was hit by a car that failed to stop.

The car is believed to be a dark-coloured Vauxhall Insignia.

Sgt Jack Swindells said police did not believe it was a targeted hit-and-run and urged the driver to contact them.

The injured man was taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact them, external.

"The area is residential and is a busy road, so it's possible that other cars travelling on the road will have dashcam footage, or homes will have doorbell cameras, that could have captured helpful footage," Sgt Swindells said.

Ardmore Road has been closed while inquiries are carried out.
