Thieves have used a digger to break into a building society, police have confirmed.

Officers were called to Biggleswade High Street at about 05:15 BST where an excavator was found in a ram raid on the Nationwide premises.

Bedfordshire Police said "officers would remain at the scene to ensure the vehicle is safely recovered and to minimise access to the building and its vicinity due to structural damage".

The public are being advised not to attend or travel through the High Street on Sunday while investigations continued.

The force has not confirmed what was taken but has appealed for witnesses.

Det Insp Jon Wheeler said: "This incident is one that has not only caused disruption to members of the public, but as a result, many people may also have had their personal and professional daily routines affected.

"We are grateful that no one was hurt as a result of this incident."
