Owner of 'filthy' guest house avoids jail

Beverley Guest House was falsely advertised as clean, despite failing to meet hygiene standards

The owner of a Beverley guest house has received a suspended prison sentence after failing to meet trading standards.

John Hart, 60, of Beverley Guest House in Keldgate, appeared at Hull Crown Court for sentencing on Friday.

At a previous hearing, he pleaded guilty to six offences, including falsely advertising his business as clean when it was described as filthy by customers.

Speaking after sentencing, Daniel Padgham, trading standards manager at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said Hart had disregarded guidance and “numerous warnings” to improve.

Hart, whose guest house is also known as Minster Garth, admitted failing to meet standards for hygiene, customer service and health and safety.

He received a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and was ordered to carry out 20 days of rehabilitation activities.

He was told to pay compensation to guests of £734.44.
