One of the largest gyms in Brighton is closing, according to correspondence sent to its members.

An email from Fitness First in the city sent on Monday evening said that "despite our best efforts to work with the landlord to keep the club open" the gym will "permanently close its doors on Tuesday".

The company said that "circumstances beyond our control have left us no other option".

It said it was "a difficult decision" and "one that had not been made lightly".

The company said prepaid members should contact them for a partial refund for the period beyond 28 January.

It said refunds will be processed within 14 days.

Monthly membership refunds will be processed automatically within the next two to three weeks.

The company offered "since apologies" to its members.

Sandra Wrighton and Jan Whiting have been members of the gym for more than 20 years.

Ms Wrighton told BBC Radio Sussex: "We're both in our 70s and they don't make you feel awkward here and we've a nice group of friends at the gym."

Ms Whiting said: "It's not one of those gyms where you're expected to be 25 and in lycra. We won't find another like it in a hurry."

Tom O'Driscoll has used the gym for four years.

He said: "It's really sad for the staff to have to find a new job with less than 24 hours notice."
