A man, who jumped onto a police vehicle and shattered the windscreen onto two officers, suffered a head injury when he fell off the car, police said.

The man jumped onto the stationary car when officers were in Bearwood Road, Bearwood, near Birmingham, during the early hours of Sunday.

The man is alleged to have then "kicked the windscreen causing the glass to shatter with two of our officers inside", said the force.

It added the suspect sustained a serious head injury when he fell from the vehicle and was taken under arrest to hospital, where he remains.

The man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting two police officers and causing criminal damage to a force vehicle.

West Midlands Police added it had informed its professional standards department and referred the matter to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) "as is standard with incidents of this nature".
