Police in Surrey are looking for a man who was seen "shooting marbles or pellets" from the roof of a supermarket on Thursday evening.
Members of the public reported the incident at Sainsbury's on Kiln Lane, Epsom, shortly after 19:00 GMT.
Officers attended the scene and the store was closed while inquiries were carried out, but the force said the man has not been found.
No injuries were reported.
The suspect is described as a white man, about 6ft (1.8m) tall, with dark hair.
He was wearing a white long sleeved jumper with black writing on and red shorts, Surrey Police said.
"We understand the heavy police presence may have caused some concern and we want to thank the store staff for supporting officers whilst we dealt with this incident, as well as the public for their patience this evening," the force added in a Facebook message.
