Lower speed limits proposed to make roads safer

Surrey County Council has launched a public consultation on three speed limit reduction proposals across Woking

A series of speed limit reductions have been proposed across Woking in an effort to make roads safer for drivers, pedestrians and schoolchildren.
Surrey County Council has launched consultations on three separate schemes, including a reduction on the national speed limit to 40mph on Cemetery Pales in Brookwood.
The council said the 0.7-mile (1.1km) stretch of road between the A322 Bagshot Road and Chapel Lane had been the site of a fatal collision and two serious crashes in the past three years.
Council engineers concluded that lowering the limit from 60 to 40mph would improve safety, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
The second proposal is to reduce the speed limits in Wych Hill from 30 to 20mph on Orchard Mains, Wych Hill Rise, Blackbridge Road, and Fernhill Close.
The third would see 20mph limits introduced on sections of Sythwood and Brookfield, covering approaches to Sythwood Primary School and Nursery.
The council said slower speeds would give drivers more time to react during busy drop-off and pick-up periods.
Residents can view the full proposals online, external or at local libraries.
