Firefighters are to tackle the Surrey Three Peaks Challenge for charity on Wednesday, hiking the 22-mile (36km) round trip route in full kit.

Surrey Fire & Rescue Service (SFRS) recruits will be taking on the gruelling task to raise funds for The Fire Fighters Charity.

The walk will see them navigate Box Hill, Holmbury Hill and Leith Hill, ascending a total of 1,060m (3,477 ft)

Posting on their JustGiving page they said their goal was "to support the vital services that the charity provides to firefighters and their families in need".

The Fire Fighters Charity offers physical, mental, and social wellbeing support to staff - both past and present - and their families.

"By participating in the walk, they aim to raise awareness and funds to ensure that these essential services continue to thrive," the team added.

They have already raised £4,780, nearly doubling their goal of £2,500.

That's in addition to the £107,618 SFRS has raised for the charity between 2023 and 2024.

That total, which is the sixth largest out of all fire services in the country, was raised through sponsored walks, car washes and open days.

More than half of it, £56,999, was raised from community fundraising events, an increase from £38,000 the previous year, and a further £26,700 was raised through salary donations.
