Nearly 60 vehicles have been taken off the road in a police crackdown on uninsured drivers.

West Yorkshire Police said officers stopped 228 vehicles across the county in September and October, seizing 58.

Codenamed Operation Scalis the force worked with the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) on the initiative.

Ch Insp James Farrar, from the force's Roads Policing Unit, said: "We know there is a clear link between uninsured drivers and criminality, and operations like these have an important part to play in making our roads safer.

"We will continue to work with partners like the MIB to target those who believe they can use the roads illegally.

"We understand not everyone means to drive uninsured, and sometimes mistakes can happen. I would urge all drivers to check your policy and make sure you are fully insured."
